Who Should Buy A Hydration Pack

If you head out for a run, bike ride, hike, a day at the park or amusement park, or other adventures, it’s important to stay hydrated. However, it’s difficult to carry enough water conveniently. If you want to have water that is easily accessible, a hydration pack with an internal water bladder is an excellent solution.

Hydration packs reduce the number of water bottles you need to carry. Having a water bladder eliminates the need to carry disposable water bottles and it frees up space in your backpack for other necessities. Reusable water bottles can add quite a bit of extra weight. A water bladder, on the other hand, is lightweight and can hold up to 3 liters of water.

One of the main reasons people choose to use hydration packs is easy easy access to water. The drinking hose goes from the water bladder inside your pack to your shoulder. The bite valve lets you take a drink without stopping, which can be very convenient and useful when you’re biking, running, or have your hands full.

This pack holds up to 2 liters of water but is still lightweight and comfortable to wear.

Important Features To Consider

A hydration pack should have a few essential features, depending on how you plan to use it. Here’s what to consider when selecting a hydration backpack for your next adventure.

  • Water capacity: Hydration backpacks can carry anywhere from 1/2 liter to 3 or 4 liters of water. If you are planning long adventures where you will need more water and weight is not a concern, consider choosing a hydration pack with more water storage capacity. You might also need more water if you are going to be out in hot climates or won’t have ready access to refills. If weight is a concern, choose a hydration pack that holds less water. This is especially true if you plan to take your pack running. You won’t want a lot of water sloshing around on your back.
  • Storage capacity: One of the great things about a hydration backpack is that you can easily carry your water and other essentials. It’s always a good idea to carry a snack and some extra clothing when you head outside for an adventure. If you’re planning to take a hydration pack on bike rides, you can also store your repair kit in the pack. Some packs are very small and only have room for your phone and a few small items. Other packs are practically large enough for backpacking! Choose a hydration backpack with enough storage for all the essentials you plan to bring with you.
  • Harness and straps: Most hydration packs are designed for comfort and breathability, but not all packs are meant to be worn running, hiking, or biking. Some are designed more for a day at the amusement park or festival than for high-impact activities. Choose a pack that has the right amount of padding, ventilation, and compression. If you plan to use the hydration pack for running, choose one that has very adjustable straps so you can make it fit and eliminate as much movement and jostling as possible.
  • Bite valve: The bite valve is where you put your mouth to drink water out of the water bladder through the long drinking hose. Most are made of soft rubber and require you to bite down while you suck the water out.  A great feature to look for on bite valves is an on/off feature that keeps the water from leaking out when it’s not in use.
  • Fill opening: Water bladders usually have an opening to fill it with water. Bladders with larger openings are easier to clean and fill. You can also put ice cubes into bladders with larger fill openings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hydration pack and how does it work?

Hydration packs are backpacks or hip packs with a special “reservoir” or “bladder” that holds water. The bladder has a long tube with a bite valve at the end so you can get water to your mouth without accessing the bladder or taking off your pack.

You fill the water bladder and place it in the special sleeve inside the backpack. The tube feeds through a special hole in the pack and usually runs along the shoulder strap to your mouth. When you are thirsty, all you have to do is put the bite valve in your mouth and take a drink!

Hydration packs come in a wide range of sizes and shapes so you can find one that best suits your outdoor activities. Some are lightweight and small for running and other high-impact activities. Others look just like a regular backpack on the outside and hold a lot of gear, in addition to the water bladder.

Can you put a hydration bladder in a regular backpack? (Retrofitting a regular backpack with a hydration bladder)

In most cases, you can add a hydration bladder to a regular backpack. The key is to put the water bladder inside the pack where it won’t move around much and so the tube exit is at the bottom, then the retrofit will work. The tube exit must be at the bottom because most water bladders rely on gravity to force the water through the tube and to the bite valve.

If you have a way to add a small hook to the inside of your backpack, so the water bladder hangs inside the bag, that’s a plus! It will keep the water from sloshing around too much and help prevent leaks. If you’re worried about leaks, you can put the water bladder inside a dry bag (or put the rest of your belongings inside dry bags). You’ll also need a hole in the backpack to run the tube to your mouth, but some people just leave the zipper open a crack.

Do hydration packs keep water cold?

Some hydration packs have insulation to help keep your water cold. Usually, the insulation surrounds the “sleeve” where the water bladder slides into your pack. There are a few things you can do to help keep your water stay cold. Add mostly ice to the water bladder so you are drinking melted ice instead of chilled tap water.

You can purchase insulation sleeves for the water bladder and the drinking tube. The added insulation will help keep your drinks cold for much longer, especially in warmer climates, and if you are participating in rigorous activities. Remember, your body heat is warming the backpack in addition to the sun and other environmental factors.

How do you drink from a hydration bladder?

Once you fill the water bladder and put it in the backpack, run the drinking tube through the opening and over the shoulder strap. Put on the backpack, just like a normal pack. The bite valve should easily reach your mouth. To drink, just put the bite valve in your mouth and gently bite down with your teeth while sucking water out, just like using a straw. Some bite valves have an on/off valve, so if water doesn’t flow easily, check to make sure the valve is open.
