Best Pop Up Tent Overall: Diamond Candy 2-3 Person Pop Up Tent

Having considered a vast array of options, the pop up tent that wins our vote as the best model currently on the market is the Diamond Candy 2-3 Person Pop Up Tent. This tent is a great choice for backcountry, campsite, and beach campers alike and boasts all the specs and features needed to keep you comfortable and dry on any kind of camping trip.

What makes the Diamond Candy Pop Up Tent stand out from the best of the rest is the fact that it offers outstanding quality and design features at a very reasonable price point. Unlike countless other tents on the market, this tent actually lives up to the 2/3-person claim made by its manufacturers, offering a total of 39 square feet of floor space and a peak height of 45 inches, which makes it spacious enough to accommodate two adults and a child. It also uses very rugged, waterproof materials and has an outer rainfly canopy that helps to keep the worst rainfall away from the tent body whilst enhancing ventilation.

In terms of features, this tent’s a bit of a winner, too, boasting mesh bug netting over the main entrance, a robust hanging loop on the tent roof, a large storage pocket, and a functional carry bag. As an added bonus, in warmer conditions, the tent “rainfly” canopy can be detached from the tent body and used as a simple canopy shelter to provide shade.

At 6.8 pounds, this isn’t the lightest pop up tent on the market, but this is a small price to pay for its overall solid, reliable construction and wealth of user-friendly features.

Diamond Candy 2-3 Person Pop Up Tent Key Features:

  • 39 square feet of floor space
  • Double-walled design
  • Campody detachable from tent body
  • Excellent water-resistance (5000mm hydrostatic head rating in groundsheet; 2000mm in tent body)
  • Assembles in roughly 40 seconds
  • Weighs 6.8 lbs.

Best Small Pop Up Tent: Coleman 2-Person Pop Up Tent

Best Small Pop Up Tent

Coleman 2-Person Pop Up Tent

A very well-made, reasonably lightweight tent that combines solid weather resistance with a very short setup time and plenty of user-friendly features.

The Coleman 2-Person Pop Up Tent is an excellent choice of tent for those who want all the convenience and snappy setup time of a pop up tent without compromising too much on the stability, weather-resistance, and durability of a standard camping tent.

This stylish little tent assembles in a super-speedy 10 seconds and boasts an array of winning attributes and features that make it one of the best value pop up tents currently on the market. Made with 185T, 68D fire- and water-resistant polyester fabrics in the rainfly, this tent offers far superior ruggedness, durability, and weather protection than the vast majority of pop up tents in its price range. It also uses a double-walled construction that enhances airflow and ventilation and, unlike many far pricier models of tent, has taped floor seams that ensure groundwater, dew, and condensation don’t make their way into your sleeping area by way of the groundsheet.

Other nice touches on this tent are a multi-position rainfly that can be shifted around to maximize ventilation, a duo of large interior stow pockets, zipper cuffs for added rain resistance, and a folding design that makes it easy to put the tent away at the end of your trip.

It might not be the most spacious pop up tent out there, but for solo campers or couples, it’s a great option!

Coleman 2-Person Pop Up Tent Key Features:

  • 35 square feet of floor space
  • Decent water resistance
  • Assembles in 10 seconds

Best Budget Pop Up Tent: Ezone 3-4 Person Pop Up Tent

Best Budget Pop Up Tent

Ezone 3-4 Person Pop Up Tent

A tough, robust, dome-style shelter that can easily accommodate three adults and boasts impressive weather resistance for such an affordable tent.

With 43 square feet of floor space and an impressive peak height of over 53 inches, the Ezone 3-4 Person Pop Up Tent offers more tent for your buck than almost any other pop up shelter on the market.

But this pop up tent has a lot more going for it than spacious dimensions and affordability alone, offering solid, weather-resistant materials in combination with a wealth of features sure to prove a hit with backcountry, campsite, and beach campers alike.

The Ezone uses tough 190T, water-resistant polyester fabric on the tent body in combination with a detachable roof piece that aids ventilation by creating a narrow channel for airflow between itself and the inner fabric. It also assembles in under 20 seconds, uses two large doors to aid ventilation and let you exit the tent without waking your tent partners, and has two handy interior storage pockets.

At 3.3 pounds, this tent is also far lighter than most other 3-person pop up tents on the market, meaning it scores high on portability and is a great option for those who anticipate putting in some serious mileage on the trail before pitching up for the night.

Ezone 3-4 Person Pop Up Tent Key Features:

  • 43 square feet of floor space
  • Lightweight (3.3 lbs.)
  • Quick and easy setup
  • Decent weather resistance
  • Rugged materials

Best Pop Up Beach Tent: Abco Tech Pop Up Beach Tent

Best Pop Up Beach Tent

Abco Tech Pop Up Beach Tent

A wonderfully simple little tent that’s rich in user-friendly features and takes convenience to a whole new level thanks to its short setup and take-down times.

For buyers in the market for a pop up tent that provides the perfect balance between spaciousness, ventilation, ease of access, and user-friendly features for days on the beach, they don’t come much better than the Abco Tech Pop Up Beach Tent.

This 1-2 person tent offers 29 square feet of floor space and a peak height of just 37.5 inches, meaning it isn’t the roomiest tent in our review by some margin. Gladly, the Abco makes up for these potential shortcomings with its excellent quality of build and almost peerless practicality.

The tent is made with durable nylon fabric and features two large entrances that make getting in and out of the tent very easy and also aid ventilation and let you soak up the views or keep an eye on the kids while kicking back inside the tent. These doors also have zippered mesh screens that can be used to keep bugs at bay whilst keeping the tent interior cool in high temps.

This tent also comes with stakes and guy-out points to let you pitch it at a regular campsite, has two interior storage pockets, comes with a practical storage bag, and offers surprisingly impressive stability in moderate winds for such a lightweight tent.

The only downsides to this tent are its lack of waterproofing and slightly small proportions, but if you’re a solo camper or couple and only intend on using it on the beach in fairer weather, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another option that offers comparable performance and convenience at such a low price.

Abco Tech Pop Up Beach Tent Key Features:

  • 29 square feet of floor space
  • 37.5-inch peak height
  • Weighs 3.7 pounds
  • Easy to pack away
  • Assembles in 5-10 seconds
  • Guy-out points and stakes for added stability included
  • 2 large entrances with mesh screens

Best Pop Up Camping Tent: LETHMIK Pop Up Backpacking Tent

Best Pop Up Camping Tent

LETHMIK Pop Up Backpacking Tent

This fantastically well-made tent offers all the practicality, ruggedness and performance of a standard camping tent with the convenience of a pop up model.

The LETHMIK Pop Up Backpacking Tent is a great choice for buyers who want the speedy setup time of a pop up tent without sacrificing the stability, weather-resistance, and take-anywhere ruggedness of a standard camping or backcountry tent.

This tent is listed as a 2/3-person tent and offers an impressive 43 square feet of floor space and a peak height of 55 inches, meaning it’s far roomier than many other models of pop up tent in its performance and price range. The tent body also assembles in around 20 seconds and can be combined with an optional rainfly (included) for added protection from the elements. Even when adding the rainfly total setup time should not be more than two minutes at most.

What makes this tent a standout for camping, however, is its impressive performance in wet weather. The tent body is made with highly durable 190T polyurethane fabric and the floor with hard-wearing 190D Oxford nylon with a HH rating of 3000 mm. Additionally, the LETHMIK uses fully taped seams throughout the tent body and rainfly, meaning you won’t be springing any leaks at this common point of weakness in any tent’s wet-weather defenses.

Other impressive features in this pop up tent include lightweight alloy stakes, guy lines to add stability in high winds, a robust and functional carry bag, mesh wall panels that improve ventilation, and a handful of mesh storage pockets in the tent wall.

The only downside to this tent is its fairly ponderous weight—at 8.4 pounds, it’s not going to win any prizes for portability! That said, backcountry campers can easily share the burden by splitting the components between sleeping partners and will likely consider it a small price to pay for the spacious, solid, weather-proof shelter they’ll be sleeping in once they reach camp!

LETHMIK Pop Up Backpacking Tent Key Features:

  • 43 square feet of floor space
  • 55-inch peak height
  • Weighs 8.4 lbs.
  • Waterproof
  • Rugged materials
  • Double-walled design boosts ventilation and weather resistance

Who Should Buy a Pop Up Tent

Pop up tents are an affordable alternative to standard camping tents that excel in one characteristic more than any other: ease of use. For the most part, pop up tents can be set up in a matter of seconds, making them a great choice for newcomers to camping, days on the beach, and/or for those who just want to maximize their downtime on camping trips by saving on setup time.

However, pop up tents are not, for the most part, designed for use in extreme conditions, with most models using less water-resistant fabrics and lacking other features—a full-sized rainfly, sealed seams, geodesic frame design, and storm flaps over zippers—used in standard camping tents. The bulkier frame materials of pop up tents, moreover, means they’re far less portable and packable than standard tents and so aren’t a good option for those heading into the backcountry to do their camping.

Best Pop Up Tent Overall

Diamond Candy Pop Up 2-3 Person Tent

Meet the Diamond Candy Pop Up Tent, the best pop up tent for all kinds of camping adventure.

Important Features to Consider

  • Capacity. The majority of pop up tents are designed to accommodate 2 to 4 adults, although there are a few exceptions to the rule. When buying your pop up tent, it’s a good policy to ignore the person rating (2-person, 3-person, 4-person, etc.) or use this only as a very rough guide when doing your initial research. Why? Well, tent manufacturers are in the habit of overstating capacities in an effort to make their tents more appealing to a wider range of buyers and person-ratings, sadly, are not subject to or controlled by any industry standardization. As such, finding a tent listed as “4-person” that in reality can accommodate no more than 2 fully grown adults comfortably is sadly the norm rather than the exception. To get around this problem, do a little detective work and find either the tent blueprint or its exact dimensions in the listing, which should either be in the extended specs or additional photos supplied by the seller. Once you’ve located these measurements, the overall floor space of the tent can be calculated by simply multiplying the tent’s length by its width. As a ballpark guide, the average adult sleeper requires 12 to 15 square feet of space.
  • Ease of use. The lower a pop up tent scores on convenience, the more you’re within your rights to ask the question: why not simply opt for a standard tent instead? So, what contributes to ease of use in a pop up tent? First up, look for a seller-provided setup time in the listing and then confirm this by reading a few user reviews—the big brands, after all, are no strangers to stretching the truth a little in order to make their products more saleable. Most pop up tents self-assemble in anything from 2 to 20 seconds, but models that use a detachable rainfly can take a little longer. Secondly, be sure to check user reviews for comments regarding how easy it is to put the tent away after use. In most cases, this can take significantly longer than the setup and some models have been known to put up the sort of struggle that would challenge the average WWF wrestler before conceding to squeeze back into their carry bag!
  • Weather resistance. Let’s start with the bottom line—very few pop up tents offer the level of weather resistance you can expect to find in similarly priced standard camping tents. When buying your pop up tent, the objective should be to find a model suitable for the conditions in which you expect to do your camping. If therefore, you’re a fair-weather kinda camper, you can afford to opt for a cheaper model with a single-walled design and minimally waterproof fabric. If, however, you’re likely to hit the backcountry even when weather forecasts are less than perfect and anticipate having to see out a few rain showers, then choosing a tent with decent waterproofing is a must. Waterproofing in tents is quantified by hydrostatic head ratings, which are given in millimeters (i.e. 1,000 mm HH, 3,000 mm HH, etc.). This figure refers to how much water pressure the tent’s fabric was able to withstand test conditions before leaking. As you might have guessed, the higher the HH rating, the more waterproof the fabric will be. For three-season camping (that is, in spring, summer, and fall) when you expect to encounter some degree precipitation, we recommend opting for a tent with at least a 2,000 mm HH rating in the rainfly and 3,000 mm rating in the groundsheet. Also, look for models that used sealed seams that prevent leaks where sections of the material are joined together and storm flaps that prevent any H20 sneaking in through the zippers.
  • Ventilation. Pop up tents are typically smaller than standard tents and use single-walled designs, neither of which are conducive to good ventilation. Poorly ventilated tents can be stifling, sauna-like tents, or, even in cooler temps, tents are that prone to a buildup of condensation. When buying your pop up tent, look for a model with large windows that will permit adequate airflow or one that uses a double-walled design featuring extensive mesh panels on the tent inner (aka ‘tent body’). Both of these will help keep inside temps down in warmer conditions and reduce the amount of condensation that builds upon the ten walls while you sleep.
  • Features. A few handy extras can go a long way to improving your pop up tent’s overall convenience. The most important of these to look for when buying your tent include: LED stakes to help prevent tripping on guy lines in the dark; hanging loops for lights that save you fishing around for or blinding camping companions with your headlamp; an extended canopy under which you can leave items you want to keep dry but don’t want to bring inside the tent; storage pockets to keep your gear organized; and hanging loops to maximize usable floor space by suspending gear items on the tent walls.

Once you’ve chosen the ideal tent for your adventures, you’ll also need to get your hands on a sleeping bag and mattress to keep yourself warm. Check out our guide to The Best Sleeping Bags and Best Camping Mattresses to find the best models for your backcountry trips.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pop up tent and how does it work?

There are two types of pop up tents: coiled and umbrella. Coiled tents use a large coiled spring as a frame, whereas umbrella-style tents use struts like those found in an umbrella. Both types are self-erecting, meaning they do the work of “pitching” or assembling automatically, so you don’t have to. Most models of pop up tent can be set up in as little as 10 seconds.

Are pop up tents waterproof?

Pop up tents are designed to be lightweight, portable, and easy to use. The trade-off with these three qualities, however, is with weather-resistance. Although there are exceptions to the rule, the vast majority of pop up tents are not intended—or rated—for use in heavy rain or strong winds. While you can get around this problem by covering your pop up tent with a tarp and placing another tarp under the tent as a groundsheet, doing so essentially defeats the purpose of choosing a pop up tent in the first place (lower cost, lighter weight, lack of manual effort in pitching) and is still unlikely to provide the same protection from the elements as that offered by a standard tent.

How do you put up a pop up tent?

Most pop up tents use a spring-loaded coil or struts that open the frame automatically when you release the safety strap or clip that holds them in place while stowed away in the carry bag. Most models are also freestanding, meaning that once they have self-assembled they will remain upright without the need for additional pegs or stakes. However, in windier conditions, we recommend staking in at all available loops and making use of the guy lines to increase stability.

How do you take down a pop up tent?

While setting up a pop-up tent is simplicity defined, taking one down again and stowing it safely back inside its carry bag is no easy feat and has made many a camper (the author included!) look rather clownish over the years.

The easiest way to take down a pop up tent varies from model to model. However, we can offer some general tips for the most difficult type of tent to disassemble: coil-style pop up tents.

With coil-style models:

  1. Open all doors so air can escape
  2. Grab the two top poles at their highest point on the roof
  3. Pull these together until you can switch your hands over to the ground poles
  4. Fold the tent into a large tortilla-like shape
  5. Place the tent upright
  6. Grab the poles at the top and fold inward, which should leave you with two circular shapes
  7. Place the tent on the ground and slide the two circles together
  8. Reattach the strap and slide the carry bag back over the tent
