This board is sold as part of a package that includes a OSFM (One Size Fits Most) Destroyer binding with a core size range of 8-14 and which uses plenty of padding for soft landings even on higher jumps, molded Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) cushioning in the toe and heel area, and provides outstanding stability and control while making turns.

What we love most about the Machete and the Destroyer bindings is that they offer the perfect balance between stability, agility, responsiveness, comfort, and, most importantly, versatility. The board comes with four removable fins, a feature that lets you start out with all four to maximize control before progressing to fin-free, ultra-fast riding once you’ve gained a little more confidence.

Without the above, your kid will have a hard time mastering their technique and take longer to progress as a boarder. Luckily, the Motive Jr. offers all of these attributes and a lot more to boot!

Who Should Buy a Wakeboard

Wakeboarding is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling and fun-filled recreational activities out there. If you’ve ever tried skateboarding, surfing, or snowboarding and found these to your liking, there’s a high chance you’ll also be quickly enamored by the speed, excitement, and challenge presented by wakeboarding. While being towed along at high speed behind a boat isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time, wakeboarding is a relatively safe sport owing to the fact that all landings occur on the water as opposed to the snow or concrete you’d be meet with following any wipeout on a skateboard or snowboard. Also, you don’t have to own a boat to give wakeboarding a try. There are countless waterparks and lakes across the US that let you rent boats or provide boat pilots that will do the driving while you do your riding, meaning this can be a relatively low-cost recreational activity if you happen to have a wakeboarding area nearby.

Important Features to Consider

A wakeboard should do several things well. Here’s what to consider when selecting a wakeboard for your adventures on the water:

  • User weight and board size. Choosing the right size of wakeboard is crucial to being able to ride the board successfully. Most board manufacturers list a maximum user weight with their product, and this usually correlates directly to the length of the board. Wakeboards range from around 120 centimeters to 155 centimeters in length and, as a general rule, the heavier the user, the longer your board should be, irrespective of skill level, as longer boards provide superior flotation and are able to support heavier weights. If you’re a newcomer to wakeboarding, however, we’d always recommend opting for a slightly longer board because these offer far more in the way of stability, making it easier to get starter and gained confidence on the board. As a general guide to the length of board required for users of different weights, take a look at the following:

         Wakeboard Length                                                                      User Weight

    • Under 125 cm                                                                         Under 100 pounds
    • 125 to 134 cm                                                                         Between 90 and 150 pounds
    • 135 to 139 cm                                                                         Between 130 and 180 pounds
    • 140 to 144 cm                                                                         Between 170 and 250 pounds
    • Over 144 cm                                                                            Over 225 pounds
  • Materials. Most wakeboards are made with a combination of a fiberglass exterior around either a wood or foam core. Generally speaking, models made with wood offer better flex, pop, and responsiveness but foam models are usually much lighter, more durable, and cost significantly less.
  • Skill level. As with max user weights, wakeboard manufacturers usually include a recommended user skill level with their boards, ranging from ‘beginner’ to ‘expert’ or ‘pro’.
Below, we offer a short overview of the characteristics of boards designed for different skill levels:

    • Beginner – Wakeboards for newbies are distinguished by slightly more generous sizing, more affordable prices, and either continuous rockers or very subtle (often subbed “mellow”) 3-stage rockers. These boards also usually have a beveled, rounded edge that’s less likely to catch in the water and cause a wipeout.
    • Intermediate – This category of wakeboard is very broad and contains a wide range of models that could potentially suit various types of rider. As with beginners boards, intermediate models may use either continuous or 3-stage rockers but these, for the most part, will be slightly more aggressive. Intermediate-level boards are also likely to have a slightly sharper edge and greater flex.
    • Advanced/Expert – These boards are designed to provide superior responsiveness and pop thanks to their use of a more aggressive rocker. They also usually weigh considerably less than boards designed for lower skilled users and feature a sharper edge that makes performing tricks easier.
  • Intended use. Wakeboards generally fall into one of two categories: boat wakeboards or cable park wakeboards.
Boat wakeboards are models that are used only behind your boat and are not designed to withstand the abrasion and wear and tear caused by rails and boxes in cable parks. As a general rule, boat wakeboards are also made with stiffer materials in order to improve pop off the wake and typically use molded or detachable fins that enhance board control in both the flats and when approaching the wake. Cable park wakeboards are especially designed for riding the rails and kickers found in cable parks. As such, they use a more flexible design that lets you lock into presses on rails and absorb flat landing, more rugged and durable base materials to prevent the wear and tear, and have much shorter or no fins.
  • Type of rocker. The type of rocker used in a wakeboard determines the amount of curvature in the board. Broadly speaking, there have traditionally been three types of rocker—continuous, 3-stage, and hybrid—though in recent years a fourth type of rocker—the camber rocker—has gained traction and popularity in the market. Below, we’ve added a short overview highlighting the benefits of each type of rocker.
    • Continuous Rocker – This type of rocker has a smooth, curved shape and is famed for providing a smoother riding experience than the alternatives. Continuous rockers also carve and glide better and make turning a lot easier for newcomers to the sport.
    • 3-Stage Rocker – As the name suggests, boards with this type of rocker use a tripartite construction, meaning the board’s bottom surface is divided into three different sections, with the front and back of the board raised above the board’s center. The main benefits of this rocker type are superior responsiveness and pop when hitting the wake and the ability to gain more airtime on jumps. On the downside, 3-stagers are usually more difficult to control for newcomers, particularly if their curvature is more aggressive, and less forgiving on flat landings.
    • Hybrid Rocker – This type of rocker borrows features from both continuous and 3-stage rockers. How much the board leans either way varies from brand to brand and model to model, but as a general rule these are a good choice for buyers who want the speed, carving capacity, and consistency of a continuous rocker and some of the pop and responsiveness of a 3-stage rocker.
    • Camber Rocker – These rockers are characterized by a center section that is higher than either end of the board. This style offers greater stability and distributes weight in a way that makes maintaining balance far simpler.
  • Edging. The edges of a wakeboard have a large bearing on the type of performance the board will provide. Boards with sharper edges are generally favoured by more advanced riders as they offer superior maneuverability, more aggressive turning, and greater acceleration. On the downside, sharper edges are far less forgiving and liable to “catch” in the water. More moderate, rounded edges are typically found in beginner and intermediate-level boards. These usually offer less responsiveness and less easy to maneuver in sharp turns but offer greater stability, more forgiveness, and a smoother riding experience for those who haven’t yet mastered the technique.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a wakeboard and how does it work?

Wakeboarding is a water sport in which the rider is towed behind a motorboat. The wakeboarder is attached to the board by a pair of bindings and to the boat by a length of cord and a handle grasped in either one or both hands.  The boarder rides in the wake of the boat and uses the crest of the waves in the wake and the speed at which the boat tows their board to perform turns and aerial maneuvers.

Wakeboards are typically made with a combination of wood or foam and fiberglass and work by providing flotation and supporting the weight of the rider as they are towed along by the speeding boat.

What is a 3-stage rocker wakeboard?

A three-stage rocker is a term used to describe a wakeboard that features 3 distinct planes at the base of the board, with the tip and tail of the board rising above the center section. This design helps the wakeboard “pop” higher out of the water when the rider hits tip of the wake. This type of board is ideal for riders looking to learn tricks, gain more airtime on jumps, and who have the technique required to control landings. However, due to the inconsistency of the pop off the wake and the potential for harsher landings, more aggressive 3-stage rockers (those with more pronounced curvature at the tail and tip) are not the best bet for newcomers to the sport.

What size wakeboard do I need?

The size of board you need will ultimately be determined by your body weight, with smaller or shorter boards being more suitable for lighter users and larger, longer boards for heavier users. As a general rule, riders who weigh under 150 pounds will be best served by a wakeboard in the 130-134 cm range; those who weigh 150-180 lbs. by a board in the 134-139 cm range; those who weigh 170-250 lbs. by a board in the 140-144 cm range; and riders who weight over 250 lbs. by board over 144 cm in length.

What is a hybrid wakeboard?

A hybrid wakeboard is one that can be used for both boat riding and in cable parks, allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds. While the specific design characteristics of hybrid wakeboards can vary greatly from model to model, most feature detachable fins, more flex in the ends of the board, and a stiffer center section, thereby allowing you to lock into presses but still get plenty of pop from the wake when boat riding.
